You cannot maximize your potential in poker when you do not want to get out of your comfort zone. The comfort zone are those familiar scenarios and actions which come pretty much natural to you. In your comfort zone, you are not afraid and can confidently make decisions. If you want to make long-term gains though, breaking out of it is necessary.
Staying in the comfort zone will result to short-term profits but venturing outside this comfort zone will mean more profits, moving up, adaptability to other circumstances, mastering other kinds of games.
Let us say you do not go for higher stake poker games, then it is but natural that you will not develop the skills and the killer instincts to conquer this game. If you cannot handle the pressure of short handed games, then tournaments will be like jumping off a cliff for you.
If you want to develop your game, you need to get out of your comfort zone. The more often, the better. Getting out of it though involves sacrificing your short-term profits and of course, your comfort.
Do not resist change. It takes getting used to but you will be able to adapt as you see clearly the long term effects of your venturing out of your comfort zone. You will be losing some money along the way but it is all part of the game. You need to remember the big picture and your goal at the end of the line. You have to weigh the psychological sacrifices as well as the financial risks involved.
The cause and the effects of getting out of the comfort zone must be clear so you can rationalize why you want to move out of your comfort zone. The relationship among these factors will be the primary force that is holding you back from improving your game, and going out of your comfort zone.
Have Fun, Loosen Up
I wonder what some professional poker players want to achieve with a table image that is so cold with the quiet demeanor plus a baseball cap, and dark glasses to boot. Maybe they want to let others see them as a tough, serious player so they can intimidate them. But when you think of it, have this very cold table image and you will most likely get opponents that you do not want to play against.
In case a recreational player is passing by some tables of poker. One table has people wearing caps, headsets, dark glasses and the works while on another table a group of people talking to each other, wearing comfortable clothes, and smiling during a round of poker. Where do you think the recreational poker player will join?
In case you are on a table that has players who are mean, cold, and tough. Will you be enjoying the game? Of course not, most likely you will tighten up and also be cold to everyone. You will also not last long with boring company who does not care about you and just cares about getting all your poker chips. This is oppose to the picture of joining a group of poker players who are just having good time.
The great players of poker though know how to put up a gambling image. You will have a hard time reading them since they can vary how they handle their cards. They will get the chips in the long run but they can appear to be losing during some rounds. They have it all planned out.
Exert some effort to get the gambling image on the poker table. Enjoy the game and loosen up a bit. It is nice to meet the best players and get to know poker without those dark glasses.
